Stockholm Gerontology Research Center was founded in 1986 by the Stockholm County Council and the City of Stockholm. The center´s mission is to conduct and communicate research findings of specific relevance to elderly people and their situation in society.

Stockholm Gerontology Research Center are together with the Aging Research Center (arc) two multidisciplinary centers located in the House of Aging Research in the central area of Stockholm, Sweden.
Approximately 80 researchers and investigators from various disciplines are studying elderly persons health and living conditions, as well as provision of public care and services. This facilitates a multidisciplinary perspective that is essential for a comprehensive picture of elderly peolpe´s health, well-being, and social situation.
ARC is an academic institution within the Division of Geriatric Epidemiology at the Karolinska Institutet and the University of Stockholm (KI-SU-ARC). ARC was initiated in 2000 by fas (the Swedish Council for Working Life and Social Research). The primary goals of ARC are to carry out and support high quality
aging research, and to offer research facilities and formal education in a stimulating environment.
Wthin ARC and Stockholm Gerontology Research Center, several longitudinal epidemiological studies are examining the incidence and progression of disease. The main objectives of these projects are:
- To study elderly persons health in relation to
their earlier life history as well as their social
and physical environment;
- To identify specific risks and risk factors for
common diseases that affect elderly people;
- To identify elderly personsÕ needs for social and
medical care; and
- To develop intervention strategies.
Most of these studies are conducted within the
context of The Kungsholmen Project and snack
